So close you can see the surf

Lion Rock Surf Shop is in Piha, on Auckland’s west coast, it’s probably the closest surf shop in NZ to the surf. The shop is located on the side of the Piha Store, right across the road from the camping ground. Wetsuits, body boards, surfboards (new and second-hand), with rentals available, we stock a good range of all your beach and streetware essentials. Leading labels, Quiksilver, Roxy, Billabong, Volcom, Nixon, Von Zipper, FCS, Surferskin, Element, O’Neill and more, are available at unbeatable prices.

Lion Rock Surf Shop was created seven years ago by the past 5 times national NZ champion & 2011 ASP World Grandmaster Champion Iain “Ratso” Buchanan. A shaper for over 25 years and an ASP international judge, Ratso can offer you expert advice on all your board requirements from the learner through to the experienced surfer.

Due to Ratso’s international commitments Surfing NZ accredited surf coach and Piha local Mischa Davis heads up Ratso’s Lion Rock Surf School. She loves to share her passion for surfing with those new to the sport so feel free to get in touch to book in your lesson.

Surfing in Piha

Surfing in Piha dates back to the late 50s with local legend Peter Byers being one of the very first to make surfboards in NZ. The challenging and powerful west coast surf has been a great test for all surfers throughout the years. The site of many national and international competitions, Piha has spawned many of the top NZ surfers.
